Personal project — January 2021
About a month ago, I came to the realization that I hadn't made anything like this in years. The art I made in my childhood could very well reflect someone who just got their hands on Photoshop and started going crazy with blending modes and layer effects. I would mismash images together and see what worked and what didn’t. Granted, this was when I was 10 years old, so they weren’t the best, but I was having fun! I liked the collage-esque style I ended up developing.
Unfortunately, as I grew up and started getting into design as a real career, I fell out of it. I might’ve created a few things here and there for school projects, but they weren’t quite the same, and I didn’t get the same child-like satisfaction from making them. This is something that’s been on my mind for a while, to just create something and have fun with it, but I didn’t know what kind of project I could channel that into. I sought inspiration, and settled on creating a set of pieces that would work as one.
So I went back to my roots. I thought it would be cool to create something that had a centerpiece, with elements surrounding it that gave more insight into the character and the story of the game. I gathered screenshots of various in-game elements and environments, and cut ‘em all out like magazine clippings. I also wanted to incorporate and play with huge type, with words that fit the light & dark theme of Destiny 2. I used elements of the background and individual props to play with depth, clipping with the typography. Add a little texture here and there, and some smaller text for flavor.
Overall, I think I made something super sick. In making these pieces, I learned it's important for artists to take time to revisit the things that made them fall in love with their chosen medium in the first place. I haven’t had this much fun with a project in a while, and I’ll definitely be creating more like it.
